Welcome

Welcome, LifeHacker readers! The site got mentioned on one of their articles earlier this week, and there's been a huge swarm of people checking out the site. I've received several requests to add additional sites, and I'm working on them as quickly as possible. If you want to have a site added, just the info and I'll see if it will work with this setup.

Open the links below on either your iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch, and add them to your home screen. When you then open them from your home screen, they will display as a fullscreen app. More Info

YouTube Added Since Google was kind enough to release a new version of the YouTube mobile site, I figured I'd make a fullscreen wrapper for it (plus, a frillion people emailed me about it O_O ). I'm not sure if I'm happy with the current icon & splash screen - if it bugs me enough, I'll tweak them a bit. For now - enjoy!

Google Calendar Added Not quite sure how I've overlooked this app for so long, but finally remembered to add it today. There are a few other apps that I've had requests for - I'm looking into them to see if they'll work with my method. If so, I'll try to get them added ASAP.

Site Changes Complete The new framework for the site has been cleaned up and slightly improved. I've also re-added offline support for all apps (it was removed temporarily while I finalized the new changes). This does 2 things. First, if an app (like GMail) has an offline mode, my pages will let you access it in fullscreen.

Second, it tremendously helps with load times. Based on some Google Analytics data, it would take a good 3-4 seconds to load one my pages before being redirected to the desired webapp. Now, my pages seem to be loading in under a second. Granted, your desired webapp will still have to load, but on my end, there is hardly any load time.

Massive Site Overhaul! I had a bit of insomnia and couldn't sleep last night, so I figured I'd be productive. On the backend side, I've redone the entire site in PHP, allowing me to easily update existing pages and easily create new ones. As I mentioned yesterday, this change (as well as just trying to organize the site) will involve everyone re-adding any webapps that are currently being used. Sorry!

On the frontend side, I opted to give the site a facelift and go with a more "traditional" iPhone layout. I also cleaned up some CSS issues that had been bugging me, and so far everything seems much better.

Going forward, I'll be working on optimizing all of these changes - cleaning up old CSS/Javascript remnants, making the PHP code a bit more streamlined, etc. But overall, I'm happy with how my night of no sleep turned out :-)

iPad Webapp Support Begins! After several requests, I've begun working on iPad verions of the webapps. For now, I've just got GMail working, but others will follow. If you have any of my existing webapps you'd like me to add ASAP (or any new webapps), with the info.

A HUGE, HUGE thanks goes out to Chris for helping me test this. I don't currently own an iPad, and Chris was more than happy to help me test it out. Chris - sorry for bombarding you with email after email, and thanks again!

I will also be working on restructuring the website. Unfortunately, this will involve you having to re-add any webapps you are currently using. I apologize for the inconvenience, but this will (hopefully) be a "one time only" thing. Once this is completed, I should be able to update the different webapps more easily.

LastPass Mobile Added I've had a few requests to add this webapp, so I finally put together a page for it. Enjoy!

New Buzz logo & splash screen. I still haven't had time to try to recreate the (ugly) Buzz logo on my own. Luckily, I ran across someone who has already done it. Major thanks to zandog on Deviantart for their efforts.

You should see the changes after you load up Buzz once or twice. But if you don't, just readd the page to your home screen.

Offline support for Google Buzz. Apparently, I had overlooked this in my rush to get the page added ASAP. This has been corrected - thanks to everyone who contacted me regarding this.

Google Buzz Icon & Splash Screen. I've been playing around with the Google Buzz logo, but just haven't had enough time to do it justice. For now, I've put together a replacement icon for your home screen (mainly just playing with ideas for future icons). When I have the time, I will definitely put up proper images for Buzz.

Site design changes. I started running into problems with how to display additional webapps. Until now, I've had them displayed in a box. But as I add more (with Google Buzz being the most recent), I've realized that the design just won't work long term. So, I decided to try to make the site look a bit more like a native iPhone/iPod Touch app. It's still not 100% identical, but it's a lot closer.

Google Buzz! Google officially announced Buzz today, so I thought I'd add it really quickly. The icon looks... ok. The splash screen is horrible! But I'll work on it. For now, you can at least get fullscreen mode!

Added new icons & splash screens for Voice, Mail, Tasks & Reader! *Note: You may need to readd the pages to your home screen to get the full effect of the new icons. You will automatically see the updated icons, but may not see some of the glossy effects without readding. This shouldn't be a problem again in the future.

Enabled offline mode. So long as the webapp itself supports working in offline/airplane mode, so will my pages. Currently, only Google has only added offline support for GMail.

This should also make my pages load faster. Normally, your iPhone/iPod would load the pages, check the site for new images, etc. Now, it only verifies the local cache against one file on the server (which is currenly 600 bytes, which is hardly anything).

January 29, 2010

Added new splash screen for Voice and tweaked some various JavaScript stuff.

Site launch! Preliminary/beta pages setup for Google Voice & Google Tasks that allow you to view these web apps in full screen on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

with comments/questions. If you have a webapp that you'd like me to add, I'd be happy to do so. So far, it's been mostly Google products, but I'm happy to add any webapp you'd like.

Thanks,
-Jonathan
